Lydia Lee Garrett, who started as a caregiver in 1967, and received her Certification as a Nurses' Aide in 1978 , has produced a work which, while extensively researched, was described as feeling "like having a long cozy chat with a caring, experienced mentor." With a background ranging from hospital wards to the intensely one-on-one world of in-home hospice work, she uses her own experiences, and those of colleagues to illustrate key points. Using expertise, wit, and compassion, she provides guidance and advice on topics ranging from "Internet Etiquette" and shopping for the client to "Sex, Love, and the Client."  There are sections for the caregiver and for the potential client on how to find the right agency or registry. Can't find a registry you like? There is a section on how to start your own.

Clear statements of the rights and responsibilities of Caregiver, client, and family are at the heart of the book. Professional relationships, like all others, thrive when each person has an understanding of their own role, and of how that role fits in with the other parties.

A year of book tours, consultations, and seminars produced a wealth of "what about....?" questions. The answers, and their impact of the involved parties, form the basis of the second edition. There are over a hundred new pages.  Existing sections were expanded and enriched, and entirely new sections were added.
